Shelly Collins

Integrated Operations Centre Manager

12 March 2025

With a 23-year-long tenure at Christchurch Airport, Integrated Operations Centre Manager Shelly Collins has witnessed some remarkable moments. Find out what she does day-to-day, and what’s kept her here all these years.

Tell us about what your team does at the airport.

We are the Integrated Operations Centre (IOC), and we are here 24/7 looking after operations airside (where the aircraft hang out), landside (where the cars, buses and people hang out) and on campus (where our tenants and stakeholders hang out).

I like to think that we are the heart of Christchurch Airport – you can’t see us but we keep the blood pumping and we’re here to help in any situation.

What does a typical ‘day in the life’ look like for you?

No two days are ever the same. In fact, it can vary minute to minute! We might start off dealing with fog and delays, then have to dispatch our Airport Fire Fighters to assist with a medical call, then have to park aircraft on our itinerant stands, all while dealing with business as usual.

What do you love most about your job?

I love thinking on my feet and working with awesome people in the IOC, wider airport team and airport community as a whole. I get a real buzz out of bringing people together to reach a common objective.

How long have you been with Christchurch Airport?

I have worked for Christchurch Airport for 23 years. Before that I worked for Ansett New Zealand and before that, for British Midland Airways at Heathrow Airport.

That’s an impressive tenure! What’s kept you here all these years?

The challenge my position brings and knowing that my team make such a difference behind the scenes. The people who work here are amazing – they always go the extra mile and genuinely care about the people around them.

What’s been your most memorable airport moment?

Seeing people rally together after the earthquakes. When the USAR teams arrived from Japan and overseas, people in the airport just stopped and clapped them in. It was incredibly humbling and an honour to work with the Airforce and other agencies to bring in much needed aid to the people of Christchurch.

What are you happiest doing when you're not working?

Spending time with my two gorgeous daughters and wonderful, understanding husband. We enjoy walking in the Port Hills, where our effort is always rewarded with a beautiful view.

Favourite local weekend getaway?

Hanmer has a special place in my heart. It’s fun for the kids, I love the forest walks and it’s just magical when it snows and you’re sitting in the hot pools.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their career at the airport?

If you like working in a people-focused environment where every day brings something new and exciting, then give it a go. You never know, you just might meet the person of your dreams – I know I did, as this is where I met my husband!
