Christchurch Airport steps up its freight game

Big news: Christchurch Airport is about to double its freight handling capacity. Thanks to an exciting partnership with Fulton Hogan, we’re expanding our freight apron – the special parking area for aircraft – as part of our 2040 Master Plan.

This boost in capacity means we’ll be even better equipped to support South Island businesses, especially in the booming e-commerce sector.

The expansion is pretty impressive, too. The new apron will be big enough to fit up to eight smaller freighters or four larger widebody aircraft, covering an area about the size of six football fields! It’s a step up from our current setup, which can handle just three aircraft. With online shopping and demand for South Island’s top-quality products skyrocketing, this expansion couldn’t come at better time and is set to future proof out airport

Fuelling Growth for the South Island

Justin Watson, our CEO, puts it best: “With Christchurch Airport operating 24/7, we’re able to keep the region’s freight moving fast. Your parcels get here sooner, and our famous Kiwi fresh food exports arrive on the plates of international diners in double quick time.”

“This expansion lets us keep pace with the demand for air freight, helping our region thrive and rubber-stamping Christchurch Airport’s role in the global trade network,” he adds. The apron is right on the doorstep of our freight hub, Dakota Park, – so goods can be whisked between aircraft and logistics providers with supper efficiency.

Building Sustainably for Tomorrow

Sustainability’s at the heart of this project. Fulton Hogan has already broken ground and is using eco-friendly materials like low-emission asphalt and recycled resources wherever possible. Simon Dyne, Fulton Hogan’s COO, shares our vision: “We’re excited to work with Christchurch Airport on this one – bringing innovation and a real focus on sustainability to an important project.”

The apron expansion is set to be ready by late 2025, making sure Christchurch Airport can keep delivering for South Island businesses and communities long into the future.
